timing chain sprocket

I have the cover off and ready to remove the chain and tensioner.

The chain has about 1/4 inch of deflection. Is that about normal?

The sprockets look to be worn a little. The teeth are not sharp but there is little space on the ends. What should they look like.

I apologize for all the basic questions but it will be easier to make the necessary repairs now.

I don't know specifically about the TR6 engine, but on the 4 cylinder TR engine, maximum allowable chain deflection between the sprockets is 10mm or about 25/64 inches. Here is an illustration of good sprocket teeth and worn ones.

Here is a test from the hot rod guys: Timing chain test I don't think it is engine specific although this was worked out for V8s.
Even though your deflection (1/4) seems to be withing specs, my inclination would be to replace at least the chain and tensioner. Tom

On further inspection the cam sprocket shows signs of wear. The teeth are sharp.

I had planned on changing the chain and tensioner. I will also change the cam sprocket.

I have no idea of your engine build, but I building a TR6 engine right now and got a adjustable vernier style cam gear from BPNW, it retails for about 200 bucks, but you can dial the camshaft in exactly where you need as for timing for a performace camshaft, which we have for this engine. Nice piece I plan on documenting it's use on the forum here as we get into the assembly stage.

This did not start as a 'build'. I pulled the head to change the gasket and started checking some other stuff while I had it off.(see 'might as well' post) I will probably go back with a stock cam sprocket. The rest of the engine is stock and the car is a daily driver.(In the summer).

Thanks for the info though. Might be something for later when I win the lottery.
