Stone guards

OK....so I need to remove the stone guards to revive some metal on the rear of the car...


1) What hold these on to the fender and body?
2) Is there a good way to polish these to look cleaner/
3) What is the best way to seal out any moisture from creeping in behind them again

My experience is that the clip edge that folds around the
fender is what holds these on. Mine had to be shaped to fit.
My experience is that the stone guards from Roadster seem
a better quality...and really do shine better than mine.
Seal these? Have no clue...but will read this post to find
out! Gil

Not sure if they are original or not, but both my 3A's had a screw holding the bottom into the sill underneath.

I think these might be original to TS13571L. Even though the rest of the body was in primer, there was what appeared to be original paint and rust under the stoneguards. Only rust on the entire body, but it was pretty severe.

I think Don may have powder coated his. If you still have unpainted fenders I would paint them with POR15. If painted maybe some 3m clear plastic protectant over that area?

Paul - In 1990 as I was finishing my 1958 TR3A, I had the larger stone guards chromed along with all the other items. But I didn't want them shiny like a bumper so he buffed the chrome so they look just like aluminium. It's called "dull chrome". They have been on for 20 years and have a few tiny pit marks. They stay nice because the chrome is harder than the base aluminium so it resists chipping and dents better. When I clean them, I clean them like other chrome items and they will never become black as when you try to shine up aluminium parts once you are through the anodized surfaces.

Here's how they looked after 18 years and 94,000 miles in 2007 at VTR, Valley Forge PA.

What I want to know is when? is somebody is gonna make some nice STAINLESS stone guards for the TR3??? heck I bet there would be a set on every running 3 on the planet in a year.!!

These things are tough enough to install in aluminum! The compound curves would be very hard to recreate accurately unless the stainless was VERY thin. Find a set you can fit well and polish when needed........ then call me in the morning! That's my prescription.
