Vauxhall Updates - getting back on track!

Well, not a ton to report - the cold hampers everything. The burst pipes have been repaired but, the garage is still a mess partly from the damage and mostly from having to move everything in a big hurry. Had been working on the engine, got the cam housing on but couldn't set the valve clearances - the valve job I had done means the clearances are wrong, A thicker gasket has been made (during the academy awards  ) but too cold to intall.

One other issue I have had was the exhaust manifold. No problems really except it had bolts rusted in, got that sorted, and, had the suggestion made that powder coating might be a very good idea.

So, before:

after:

and the best part, I approached three different companies.

Re: Slight Vauxhall up-date - and a question

I had an email from the guy I bought the Viva from - asking about when he had sold it to me - realized I am now four years into a two year project! Realized I need to get on this on a regular basis - for the car's sake but for my own as well (see Basil's article on goofing off elsewhere) Just the act of puttering on these cars is a major stress reliever, but, I digress.

This week I have been trying to sort out the wire harness - I had purchased part of a derelict car and pulled the harness - about 90% intact and spent the last coupld of nights labelling and organizing.

The car did come with a wire harness - three actually - so, last night I went to take a look at them (mostly as reference points and possible to scavenge connectors) - The previous harnesses are in 17 pieces! 17! and all just cut and hacked. I know it wasn't the previous PO - but, who does that? There wasn't even enough information to have a new harness patterned from the old.

sheesh.

I'd imagine someone got *really* frustrated trying to remove the old harness - and cut it up to make it easier to pull.

Do you have a wiring diagram for the car?

Isn't there someplace that will make up a new one for you?

There is an outfit in England that will Doug, though when I tried a few years ago with what I had then (the 17 pieces!) they said they couldn't with what was there. The harness I have now will work fine - I peeled all the cover off it last night and it is 95% in perfect condition - and the last 5% can come from the pieces I have. I can also do a few things the original didn't like put relays in and (likely) add a couple of plugs so that the thing will be easier to fit and maintain.

Re: Slight Vauxhall up-date - and a question

After building the harness for my Prefect I sent it to Rhode Island Wiring to be braided. Not cheap but I thought well worth the investment. This is how it came back to me with the various sections in plastic bags.

Re: Slight Vauxhall up-date - and a question

well tonight there was progress - not much but some!

Before....

viva start.jpg

Back on tires - first time in maybe five years?

viva start 2.jpg

Briefly in the driveway

And into the other half of the garage

Viva mid.JPG

One one level not a big deal, except, this is the very first time ever that the car has rolled on its own wheels on the proper GT suspension - ever - as a replacement shell, the GT gear has never been on the car till now. And, it is on the better lighted side of the garage so, hopefully, progress through the winter!

One ponderable though - my house was built in 1940 - hardly the pinnacle of compact cars in North America - yet the GT fills its spot - I have no clue how you could ever have fitted a Buick! Makes me realize that the garage as much as anything else determines the focus of my hobby.

Re: Slight Vauxhall up-date - and a question

:encouragement:. I remember in the 60s, my parents' bought a single garage ranch. The previous owner had a 55 Ford that fit well. Dad had a 63 Mercury Monterey and Mom said that won't fit in the garage. So, the first day we were in, Dad showed her the Mercury would fit. He put the bumper thru the drywall and closed the door. Boy, did that **** her off. Later we put a Jag 140 in the garage as if fit better and needed work.
