have removed fan, radiator & radiator cowl. was wondering if there is enough play in steering rack or does it need to be remove to. also what size is the crankshaft nut. when i get nut off will the pulley come off or will i need a wheel puller for that. if anyone has tackled this job i would appreciate any input or pointer. thanks for any input

I removed the steering rack bolts and wiggled it enough to get the crank pulley on (removal would be similar, of course). I also cut down a standard 1 7/8" socket to fit in the space. I then used a 3/4" drive ratchet and 6" breaker bar (on a lift) to tighten the nut. It's likely that it'll be hard to remove. However, with a little patience and some forcing, you can remove the crank pulley (even the double-row one).

It can be done without removing the steering rack. Just mark the rack so that you put it back inside the brackets in the same location. The pulley nut is likely torqued to an ungodly torque and will require a impact wrench to remove. I couldn't get mine loose with a 3/4" drive breaker bar as the clutch kept slipping. Finally I pulled the oil pan off and blocked the crank with a 2x4. An impact wrench will be a good investment for this job.

I think the actual size of the socket may be 1 13/16. But a 1 7/8 is probably close enought to work. You can pick up a pulley puller for cheap from Habor Freight. The socket (and set) will set you back about $50. You can borrow a puller from Autozone through their loan-a-tool program. If you don't have an Autozone handy, a lot of the other big name auto places have a loan-a-tool program, now.

well, I"m pretty backwards, so when I pulled the engine I put the weight of the car on the block, and got the bolt loose with no problems, and as far as pulley removers go, I just loaded the block into the back of my truck, and did all I needed right at kragen didn't cost me a dime, sure I may need another some day, but as of right now I don't need one, not that they are expensive, just rarely used.
