Oil pressure light

So what is the possible cause for the Oil light to be on. The car has oil and seem to run decent pressure on the gauge(if it right)

Verify the oil pressure with an independent gauge that you know to be good. If the pressure is OK, check the sending unit, or replace with a known good one.
Jeff

If that light is similar to the one in the old 1098 Spridgets then it is a "caution" light that the oil filter is plugging and not filtering properly any more. It means that you need to change your filter. I don't know about the '70's era cars but this is a possibility.
Bill

that could be a good idea. i never have changed the oil in this car yet from it long time sitting. i plain to do so this week.

Don't '75 and '76 Midgets have the dual oil/temperature gauge? My '77 doesn't have an oil pressure light, but has the gauge. Seems to me the '78-'79 ones got rid of the dual gauge and went with the electric temperature gauge. If you're talking about the red light near the high beam indicator, that would be the generator warning light.

See i thought that was the GEN light. But in the Owners manuel it a Oil Pressure Light

That is interesting that the manual calls it an oil pressure light. I confirmed in the workshop manuals that it's still the generator warning light on a '75 and '76, so I suspect your oil pressure is fine and your generator is on the fritz.

yeah i found out i am an idiot and looked at the wrong picture. number 6 on one picture is the oil pressure Guage number 6 on the other picture is indeed the generator light. so i guess i do have good oil pressure but i dont have a good alternator.

Hehe, things could be really bad and it be the other way around.

Yeah, low alternator pressure!!! Yikes!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

so what kind of oil does an MG Alternator take anyways /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

You know after reading that website that a good idea. i know the new Lucas One i have on my 76 is very week. when you turn anything on it drops in voltage. so i may try this.

Not an oil issue - it's a smoke issue - definately replace the smoke canister and refill with OEM LUCAS smoke /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

That's it of course.

I just put a Delco alternator in my 1500. Aside from over charging, I am very happy with the conversion. It was cheap an easy. Check out this link if you are interested:

I made the conversion on my 1275 (in the BE) to a Nissan P/U alternator and have never had a regret! Prior to the switch, with the stock set-up I had regulator problems, tach drive failures and of course the voltage drop at idle. All things of the past!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
