76 TR7. I have been hearing a funny clanking noise on this rig but haven't driven it for many months and haven't tried to find it until tonight. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine which had me looking at the water pump area. When I grab hold of the fan belt (engine off, of course,he he) there is some rotational play in the pulley on the end of the crankshaft. There is a secondary (outer)pulley that is for the unused and disconnected air conditioner compressor that doesn't move. The factory service manual shows that there is a woodruff key that connects the pulley to the crankshaft along with a bolt and washer on the end of the crankshaft. Is the play, which is about 25 to 30 degrees rotation, normal or is something worn? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif When I moved it back and forth vigorously, I hear the sound I heard while the engine was running so I think I am on the right track.
