Logo change

In most of the logos, the lion (presumably the Rootes family crest) has all 4 feet on the ground. In some, however, he is rearing up on his back legs, clawing the air. When did this change take place? Did it have anything to do with the transfer to Chrysler?

Sounds even more like the Peugeot lion.

The logo is the family crest of the Earl of Shrewsbury who was instrumental in the formation of the Talbot company. Sunbeam inherited the logo after it was combined with Talbot to form Sunbeam-Talbot.

I suspect differences in the logos have a lot to do with artistic licence.

Very interesting! Is the animal a fire breathing lion? If so, is this animal based in mythology? In the emblem used in the Series V grill, the flames were omitted, and the lion is realistic, while on the rear fenders of the same model, the lion is stylized.

As a ("cough") Peugeot fan and former owner of an '88 505 STi, I can categorically confirm that the Peugeot animal is a griffin and not a lion.

Uh, not now that I've seen the pics that weren't there before. Pretty wimpy lion if that's "clawing the air".

From Michael Moore at HereditaryTitles.com: The crest you are asking about is a gold lion on a chapeau - heraldically described as, "On a chapeau, gules turned up ermine, a lion statant, or, the tail extended." When beasts are drawn in heraldry, the artist has the option of rendering the tongues and claws colored red. This can sometimes cause confusion if it looks more like "fire" than toungue. The supporters on the Earl's arms are a pair of Talbots.
