Was takeing a ride about today and listening close like I usually do and heard what I thought was an engine noise. After messing a bit I have determined it was tranny.

It seems to make a bit of noise, any gear. when it does not have a load on it. Aslo seems to have a bit of freeplay between the load and unloading of it.

This is a smooth case with not a mark on any of the gears.

What am I hearing? What's the fix. I am anything but a tranny expert.

Its a smooth case, its 50 year' old technolgy it probley never was all that quite. I wouldn't worry to much about it.
I'm guessing it has something to do with all the datsun conversions.
Anything that runs on bushings with just a engine oil with those type of tolerances is bound to make some whining and such. Drive on son drive on...

Jack, I had a philosophy as a kid...when I heard a noise, I turned up the radio; when the radio quit working I traded cars.

Seriously...I think you've tweaked that little 948 to where she's now purring so sweetly that you are finally able to hear the normal noises emanating from the tranny (most likely from the diff).

Enjoy, my friend.

If all the gears look good, Jack, I would suspect some bearing wear in there somewhere!!

Well theres your problem!!!
Those tranny bushings are only good for 60 cycles!!
On a serious note If yor not comfortable with it
I would pull the plug and change the oil.
Lets get rid of the rebulid leftovers and see if it goes away before you do anything else
