Help with Tuning Stromberg 175CD Carbs in Houston

I have a '76 Triumph TR6 and am looking for someone in the Houston, TX area to assist with the tuning of the Stromberg 175CD carbs. This car has been stored for over 15 years and trying to get it back on the road. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum- you can get plenty of good online advice on tuning the carburetors right here on the forum - if you need someone to look at the car for you I know one guy in our Houston Triumph club that does quite a lot of work for other club members - I'll send you a private message with his contact information.

Our Houston club meets every Saturday for breakfast around the Houston area - you are more than welcome to drop by sometime. Locations are posted on our website: Texas Triumph Register

The 76 carbs had very little leeway for tuning, so either the carbs are not your problem or they need to be "rebuilt" (disassembled, cleaned thoroughly, reassembled with new gaskets). There is an excellent series of articles on the Buckeye Triumphs web site that should get you started:

Welcome Matt! As said above, tuning really = rebuild. Which isn't hard on these at all.

Is she running now but not well, or are you asking in prep to get her running?

BTW - we like pictures around here. Just a hint

Welcome to the Forum. I have copied and pasted the links to Texas from the Vintage Triumph Register. I'd be willing to bet, that if you contacted Mike in Houston, that he could get you connected with a club member in your area to give you some personal guidance right at your location.

Let us know how you make out. We will be here to help as well.

Thanks to everyone for the info. Here's the history ... inhereted the '76 TR6. It has been stored for over 15 years. the car is in great condition with only 50K original miles. So far to get the car back in working order I have replaced the brake system, cleaned fuel tank, replaced fuel filter and pump, flushed cooling system, replaced ignition system components, replaced oil filter and oil pan gasket, replaced clutch hydraulic system and have cleaned out fuel lines. The car starts and idles fine, but as soon as I attempt to throttle the motor at all it stalls immediately. I am assuming that this is caused by carburation problems. Any thoughts?

Quite possible. How does it run on full choke?

Makes me suspect a defective air valve diaphram. However, after a 15 year hibernation, there are probaly dried up O-rings and sticky needle valves to deal with as well.
I have the same suggestion as TR3driver in that regard.

Given that history, I'd pull the carbs apart for cleaning even if it was running OK.

These guys are correct as usual. There is probably a lot of old varnish from evaporated gasoline of may years ago.

Engine will start cold on full choke and runs somewhat smooth with no choke after warm up. The only problem I am seeing is anything beyond idle the engine stalls. Have carb rebuild kit on order. Thanks for all the help.

Keep us posted on how you make out. Taking some pictures when you have the carbs apart will be helpful to others who have the same problem someday.

Did you ever contact any of the guys in Texas on the list that I posted? It would be nice to line them up for possible help ahead of the carb kit arriving.

The contact info that Paul posted is very good - the local club for you is the Texas Triumph Register. I sent you a note with contact info for another guy in the club - you may not know how to access those notes yet but if you look at the top you should see a flashing icon - I didn't want to post names/numbers publicly without asking first (Pauls are fine/those are already published). For that matter, if you are near the west side let me know and I'm sure I can help a bit as well.

Welcome to BCF. I'll bet you can't ask a TR question, that someone here can't answer. Also as Randy says, the TTR is a great club. Some of the members are not that involved with the repairs to their cars, but some are very involved. When I ask Mike about my TR6 he likes to say "I'm not that familiar with those newer models..." as he prefers the TR3s/4s -but he does have some special tools he's made to help with TR6 repairs.

So you inherited a TR6? Funny, I've never heard of one out lasting it's owner. It sounds like you are on the right track. Lets see some pictures. My TR6 is presently awaiting a few transmission parts, but should be road worthy by the time the rain stops...

Thanks to everyone for the help. Made big progress this weekend. Rebuilt the carbs and started the carb tuning process. The only issue I am having now is that it will not idle without a little bit of choke. As soon as the choke is completely off it stalls. I even set the idle adjustment screw to about 1300 RPM and after only a second it stalls.

Do you have the air valve diaphrams installed properly.
By that I mean, both index tabs on the diaphram in their proper homes; one in the top of the air valve and the other in the carb body ?

I sure do. I triple checked the positioning of the air valve diaphram before installing the top of the carb. The air valves seem to work properly when the engine is accelerated.
