GT6 Diff Help Please

I need to replace the pinion seal on my diff. It is a 3:27 out of a GT6 in a mk3 spit. The diff as far as I can figure out is a type D with the number on the bottom being KC71082. It has a castle nut on the Pinion shaft. As I understand it, there is no need to count threads when removing this type of nut. Correct?

What is the procedure for re-torqueing the nut?
How many foot-pounds of torque is needed?
Do I need to worry about pre-load? If so, how much is it and how do I check/set it?

That should do it for now. More questions will ensue I am sure. I know almost nil about diffs.

According to my Haynes book, the torque is 85 lbs ft, or is it ft. lbs.? Anyway the number is 85. As I read the entry it seems more or less, undo the bolt. take out the seal install and replace. I didn't notice anything about pre-load. Some members may have more accurate information.

Replacing the seal should not affect preload significantly, and even if it did, resetting it is a big job. Just torque the nut properly. I don't have the data, but the 85 ft-lb value sounds right to me. Just replace the seal, and as long as the diff was working correctly previously, it should work when you've finished.

The only problem you might encounter is locking the diff when you tighten the nut. I just got a piece of angle iron, drilled two holes in it, and bolted it to the flange so it prevented the flange from turning.
