Diff pinion seal

So the nose of the diff in the Morris is leaking -- same diff as our Spridgets. The axle/hub seals are leaking as well, so I figured I'd do both jobs at once. For the diff, what bits do I need?

Here's the Moss diagram:

My car should have the later housing (need to crawl under and check) so do I need a new crushable spacer? Bearings? I really just want to stop the leak, the diff isn't noisy. Thoughts?

You only need the crush spacer if you are changing the bearing. Mark the flange so you can replace it in the same position. You'll want a new gasket for the diff housing, new gaskets and O-rings for the hubs (minimum). You can probably reuse the lock tabs, but check them before you order or just replace them routinely. They are often mangled by garage monkeys. This would be a good time to check the hub bearings, and change of need be - same with the hub seals. There are some sealed bearings that are an option. I believe they are Subaru bearings. I can look up the specifics if you want or someone else might provide the info. If you change out the seals and not the bearings, drift/press out/in from the outer race only. I go over the process to R&R the axles in a tech note on my web technical section.

Thanks for the info, Gerard. I've already got new bearings for the Morris (got a kit from Bull Motif) but I'd still like to know what the Subaru option is if the info is easy for you to find.

Hi Drew,
I have a socket to fit the axle nuts (it's big), and I have a hub puller. I can bring either or both to BFD if you want to borrow them.

I've got a socket, but I could use the hub puller for sure. I'd love to borrow it. See you Saturday!

I've got several different types. I'll bring 'em all.

I believe the number is 207FF. That'll likely cross reference to others as well. Cost is supposedly about the same. What you are looking for is a sealed bearing with the same dimensions. I've not installed these before, but have read others being satisfied with the results. It's suppose to eliminate the axle seals, but again, going by what I have read, not personal experience.

Peter Caldwell advocates those subaru bearings.
