TR6 Sputtering help

My 72 is sputtering under acceleration. Thought it was bad gas so filled with new. After about 3 minutes, all of a sudden car came to life and back to normal.

Today I take it out and it's back to sputtering. Tried adjusting carbs, moving distributor a bit, but nothing seems to work. Floats are full, seems fine when idle and reving pressing to on the carbs, but not when I step on the gas in gear. Any recommendations?

Maybe bad plug, or plug wire. Look for any evidence of plug "arcing" if near any steel parts. Not likely distributor cap, but check both that and the coil connection. After the experiences I have had, if I get nowhere quick with sputtering, I replace the condenser and even swap out the coil. Some people say sputtering is almost always fuel or spark, so be sure you don't have a sticking jet needle or other fuel issue, like a stuck choke or carb piston. Which carbs are on your car? I recently tried two new fuel pumps only to learn my issue was the coil, but that issue admittedly was starting not sputtering, so probably not relevant to your case.

Just checked my new RGK spark plugs and regapped to make sure they were all .25. Ends are totally black. Guess my air/fuel mixture is too rich? Would that cause constant missing?

A coat of soot on the plugs will certainly impair the spark. Change the plugs and lean the mixture. I do not know if you have a choke, but I assume so. Make sure they are opening fully after start. Somebody with knowledge of your carbs will happen along and might have other ideas.

+1 on the "replace the condenser and coil" suggestion. Sputtering *on acceleration* is often an electrical problem, and a sign of bad coil and/or condenser.

If the plugs were black, was that after a series of short drives? If engine never fully warms up, plugs can get that black (carbon) coating. If plugs turn black even after long-term driving (an hour or so,), then mixture is probably too rich. Especially if missing is constant (not just under acceleration.

Have you checked your fuel filter?
No go juice = sputtering
