Sputtering in left hand turns

So on my drive last weekend I noticed the following:

1. In a reasonably quick left-hand turn, say one where you're driving reasonably hard, the engine will eventually sputter as if it's out of gas.

2. In the same sort of right hand turn, no problems at all.

How do I fix this?

I'd check the fuel filter type/location/orientation, and how firm the float bowl spacers are holding the bowl. I think the floats swing inline with the car unless the lids are oriented wrong.

Or... it could be electrical if there is something swinging over and shorting the coil/dist wire (low tension).

Had the same problem when I was Auto-Xing back in the 70's (last century). The only way I was able to remedy it was to orientate one of the carb float axis N-S and the other E-W. After identification of the problem, I added a 90 degree fitting to the front carby so it pointed straight up and hooked the fuel input there.

Wasn't perfect running SU's, but was much better than before I changed.

YMMV

Mine did that and the float level was too high. (albeit due to too much fuel pressure raising the level.) IIRC, Hap did your carbs too so it might be a pressure problem. I only say this based off of my experience.

I had wondered about the fuel pressure. I'm running a Carter fuel pump without a pressure regulator. Worth a try to put one into the system and see if it cures the problem.

Sounds like it's already been nailed but I'm +1 for fuel pressure.

I thought the racers trick to fix this was to add a spacer to the float chamber, effectively giving it more capacity?

Get the other float bowl lids that use the free floating float rather than the hinged float. Minis use them. Look around Mini sites, you'll see them.

Also, if you spend some time searching, you can find needles and seats that are a larger bore... .100" and .125" versus the original .075. That allows the fuel in faster... it's a performance thing.

Also, make sure your ignition coil is tight.... honest, btdt.

Based on my experience I'd say that's it. They're only supposed have 2-3 psi and that's what Hap set the float level for. ( You can run I higher pressure, but the float level needs to be set lower. The extra pressure overcomes the spring loaded part of the needle and fuel doesn't shut off till that bottoms out, which means the floats need to be set lower.)

So, seeing the carbs are 100% and you aren't running a reg, then (it would seem) you definitely have too much pressure.

With my floats set properly and fuel at 3 psi, hard turns were o.k. If I stepped up the pressure any (which I did) it would sputter on hard left hand turns. You could smell fuel too.

Put the reg on and I'll bet you 1.83 tacos that'll fix it. ( Not cause I have faith in my diagnosis, but I have faith that Hap set the carbs up right.)

I do get that.

Time to dig up the regulator and find some fittings for it.

Use a good regulator. Those round ones are crap.

I HATE the round ones too, but I've never had problems with one. They just look too cheap IMO and cost WAY too much for what they are.

I've got the Holley regulator, just need scrounge up the fittings for it.

Tacos are on me if it fixes the problem, but you'll have to come out here to collect them.

NAPA should have the fittings.

Well, I put the regulator in today and it is a *bit* better. Still sputters in harder left turns, but it seems to take a bit more to get there.

So maybe just one taco...
