Filling an Armstrong Lever Arm Shock

I've got an original AH 'Bug-Eye' Sprite shop manual. Section H.8 Dampers reads:

"When checking the fluid level every 6,000 miles (10000 km) all road dirt must be carefully cleared away from the vicintiy of the filler plugs b efore the plugs are removed. This is most important is is absolutely vital that no dirt or foreign matter should enter the operating chamber.
The correct fluid level is just below the filler plug threads.
The use of Armstrong Super (thin) Shock Absorber Oil is recommended. When this is not available any good quality mineral oil to Specification S.A.E. 20/20 W is acceptable. This alternative is not suitable for low temperature operation and is deficient in various other ways."

I bought a litre of Motul 20 wt motorcycle fork oil, and you don't need anywhere near this amount.

The old oil stank, and there wasn't much of it.

Moving the lever around led to different levels; I filled to the bottom of the threads with the lever in the position leading to the lowest fluid level.

Note that the shocks are off the car.

Doug
