Seems basic, but can I mount an engine to a stand like this and then disassemble it while on the stand or will the forced needed to disassembl over stress / make the stand unstable?

Am using a similar stand with the exception of instead
of a tripod it has a smaller dual front wheel set.
Use it primarily for the fford engines. Problems I
can see on the rebuild is you have to remove the engine off the stand
to replace the flywheel/clutch assembly. These engines get
pretty heavy quickly !

I have used both types of stands and I have found that the 4 wheel type gives the most stability, especially if you need to move the engine around in the shop. The tripod works well but you need to be a bit more cautious.

I went with this one for $60 from Harbor Freight, rated at 1,000 pounds

As you can see it worked fine.

As Harry mentioned, the flywheel and such cannot be installed on this version, but everything else can, and by the time you have the head and all in place, it is heavy. I did fret about the four 5/16" bolts snapping, but they did not. Also, contrary to the manufacturer's warning about moving the stand with an engine on it, I had no problem rolling it around, although I did it as little as possible.

If you lived closer, you could have mine for a case of good beer.

I have had this stand for 20 plus years and really like it. It is rated at 1250# capacity so it can easily handle larger v-8's. The spread legs make it stable when wrenching on an engine. But one thing I really like is that I can place a drain pan between the legs.

Thanks, nearly 20,000 miles on the build now. Took it for a little 4 day drive this summer. Started in Wisconsin and was in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and back to Wisconsin. Had great fun in the Ozarks and surprised some folks going up those hills.

Oh, that grubby alternator has since been replaced.

we had several different stands types at my friends shop (he bought what ever had the best price)

My preference is for engine stands with dual legs. I like having a drip pan below the motor during teardown and with this type I can lay the pan on the legs.

for the big v-8s i like the gear drive heads, easier to turn the motor with.

I purchased the same one from Harbor Freight and it is a no frills stand but it has served me well and there are really no complaints.

You may want to look around on your local craigslist site as engine stands seem to be listed regularly there, and they can be had very reasonably.

You could also build a plate that mounts to the side of the block, where the engine mounts bolt to, and attach the stand to that plate. Or, build a custom plate that mounts where the rear engine plate mounts but has a cut out that allows the crank to be removed/installed. Both allow the crank to be removed/installed while on the stand.

I took apart a 305 V8 on the same stand. Worked fine. It was a bit bouncy with the heads on it but other than that it served its purpous. Just be carful if you have to move it. It can be a bit tipsey!

Tom,

You are more than welcome to take mine on a semi-permanent loan basis (think of it as an art piece). It can be broken down for storage.
