I recovered Harold's driver side door topper today. Here is what it looked like before:
First I carefully removed what remained of the old ICI material (there were about 50 billion rusty staples to lever out). Then I cut a larger piece of new vinyl, and stretched and taped the old piece over the back, as a template. Then I cut around, leaving an extra 1/8".
The new material I used was "Black Upholstery Pleather Vinyl" - a 54" wide x 3' long roll bought from dec_fab_direct on Ebay for $7 (!)
Then I took the new material and tacked it all around with a staple gun, starting with the long edges, and finishing with the ends ... which were quite tricky to get nicely folded.
The grain is slightly different between the old vinyl and the "Pleather":
I think the Pleather (at the top) looks nicer. Here's the finished topper, with the passenger side topper for comparison.
It's hard to tell from that photo, but the original vinyl is in fact a very dark blue, whereas the Pleather is black ... I only realised this when I put them side by side and looked carefully. Will it be noticeable when they are reinstalled in Harold? If it is, then I suppose I can simply re-do the other one.
This was a nice easy job, and recommended as a confidence booster
