DIY Michelin Red Line - 205/70R15

Given all the recent discussion of TR tires, I thought I would share my own experiment in this area.

I had some very old (+10 yr) set of Michelin 205/70R15 red line radials on the car. They were starting to crack and go out of round, so even though the tread was fine, it was time to look for a replacement.

I wanted to use a modern tire like the ones fitted, preferably a 205/70R15, rather than the old 185's, but could not find anyone who makes a red-line tire in this size anymore. I did, however, find a Michelin Symmetry "white line", which comes with a narrow white stripe on the sidewall(as the name suggests). So I bought a set of these (about $130 each, fitted and balanced), and painted the white line "red". Here is the result:

And they look pretty close to the old Michilen "X" 185s

I used some red vinyl spray paint (purchased from the local auto parts store - for recolouring interiors) applied with a paint brush. The width of the white lines is supposed to be 1/2 inch, while the originals are 3/8 inch, but by my measurements they are both pretty darn close to 7/16.

Michelin "X":

Michelin Symmetry:

The tread patterns are different, you can see the Symmetry is wider and slightly shorter than the "X":

The Symmetry is an all-weather tire - I would have preferred a summer performance tire, but they are a vast improvement over the old ones, and I suspect give better handling than the "X". I am yet to see if the paint washes off in the first rain storm though.

They look really good but would look excellent if you washed the brake dust off the rim. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Just kidding, they look great! OK maybe not kidding ...

By the way, Coker Classic does make a 205/75 R15 redline with a 3/8 stripe. They are about 163.00 apiece. I am about to buy some myself.

Great concept, fine looking tires!!

I wonder if the local bakery could powder coat
a set of tires with red lines? Does rubber
burn at 400* F ??

Thanks guys.

Have to admit I was quite pleased with myself. Just sometimes I get it right.

Do excuse the break dust on the front wheel pic - guess that's what happens when you drive your car.

It's been a while now, I was wondering how the red vinyl paint has held up?

The appearance is great! Also, the picture makes the "new" tire look wider and a little less in diameter than the old red line Michelin. Is there a difference or is it just the pictures? What brand paint, how many coats and how does it due after some mileage?
Great idea.

The tires are standing up O.K. I did get a little flaking, but think that was my own fault. I used "Kolorcote" or some such brand from my local auto parts store, and the can says "use above 65 deg", and it was about 50 deg out when I painted the wheels. I think I'll re-do them using the Dupoint vinyl dye when I get a chance.

They make actual tire paint. It is in a roller pen.

Dear Rob,

I'm the proud owner of an early TR6 PI ( 150 BHP ) and it desperately needsnew tires, thats why I reply to your message.
Do you know if those Redliners are still fabricated and are they also available in the size 185 R15 and at what price do they come???
I want to buy 5 ( including spare )of them if the price and shipcost is reasoanble.
Waiting for your answer I sincerly greet you.

E-Gads that's an old post.
Henk- You can get modern tires with that red line on them now. I didn't save any info as it was not pertinent to me but someone will pipe in.

Welcome to the zoo!
