Distributor question.

The trouble with taking things apart is remembering how to get them back together again.....

I took the servo and base plate out of my distributor on the 1800 engine to give it a good clean up and check the weights were working, a few weeks later when I went to re-assemble I found that the baseplate and servo unit can go back in two ways round.

Either with the axis of the servo pointing across the car or with it pointing forward/rearward, which is correct? Any one got a pic of a distrbiutor in a MGB?

Is there enough slack to mount the servo vacuum line either way too? I've seen them both ways.

Right then! I had another look, it seems that I was wrong and that the base plate and advance servo can only be fitted in one direction. That's good then.

I also left the clamp on the dizzy body so I should have an idea where the timing is.

I've assembled it all for a trial fit, my new condensor is too big so I'll get it changed tomorrow.

How does this look?

I cant quite work out how the little brass plate on the condensor wire should be fitted into the spring on the contact breakers, does it sort of slip into the doubled back bit on the end?

A suggestion, actually two. Take the condensor pigtail, and route it out straighter from the condensor and away from the case housing. This will help keep the insulation away from the body of the distributor, so as the plate rotates it won't wear against the insulation.

2ndly, put some distributor point grease(distributor cam lube) on the plastic arm where it rests against the cam lobes, In the direction of rotation, so that as the distributor turns it hits the grease first which helps to force the lube under the breaker arm.

Oh, forgot, looking at the rotor arm it seems awfully straight all the way across. Ideally get a rotor that has a bevel on the edge where it comes close to the distributor cap terminals.
