Clutch issues

Hi all - I am new to the forums,so apologize if this is an old subject. My BJ7 has been laid up for awhile. When I started it to drive the other day, I found that the clutch was reluctant to engage. I could take my foot off the clutch after putting it in gear, but no motion resulted! The clutch would gradually engage, but obviously something needs attention. Could find no help in manuals, so I've come to the source.

I'm thinking I need to rebuild/replace the master and slave cylinders. Or is there a way to "loosen up" the clutch action? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Kts in Vermont

Add slave cylinder hose to your list. They can swell closed with age and act like a check valve passing the high pressure generated by the master cylinder but slow to bleed back when the master cylinder is released.
Another possibility is the disc is hanging up on the splines due to corrosion or dirt. I'd bet on the hydraulics however.

One test for this theory would be to have a helper depress clutch then you open the bleed valve on the slave cylinder to see if the clutch returns normally. I agree to replace the hose to the slave cylinder if it is as old as my brake hoses, they were all closed up from age.
