TR6 Cleaning up the TR6 seat frames

Some time lapse pictures here. Doing this right is a pain in the rear, but I figure if it is a one-every-34-year thing it isn't too bad....

Covers came off, then the foam, then I stripped the paint to get to any rust, ground it out, and then priming and painting with a Zero Rust.

The Zero Rust spray I'm using is nice to work with. I'd recommend it.

What I did to mine was, put on safety glasses and gloves, get drill and wire brush that is made to use with drill, and use drill with wire brush in it to sort of strip the mess off. Then use some type of solvent to wipe down. Then, I epoxy primed the frames, and painted black, both with spray gun. Yours look to be in very good shape, believe it or not.

Oh yeah, there was a LOT of wiring brushing going on here. Problably two hours per seat.

I'd already been at it in the second picture for a bit on the flat/seat part of it when I took the picture.

I do think I got lucky on their condition. I only had one spot I had to weld where the metal band on the botton seperated from the main frame.

Great job TD, looks good and I know your feeling good about it.

So, tell me about Zero Rust, new one on me. My normal is Rustoleum heavy rust primer then a gloss, satin or flat black depending on the part, but always interested in learning about newer products.

Hi Dick - I got turned on to Zero Rust by my local body shop. They swear by it - told me not to mess around with anything else. One store opinion doesn't make for a scientifically valid sample, but these guys are well known and well regarded (body shop that is).

That said - it is really nice to work with.

I have been doing a similar process on our Spit. However, the seat was heavily corroded so I sandblasted the frame, acid etched it and have applied POR-15. So far I've only done the passenger seat frame. It is practice for the driver's seat.
