brass dampers

Which Big Healeys used the brass carb dampers? Someone told me they may be used on the early BJ8 but not the late ones. I don't remember seeing them on any BJ's. My 64 had black plastic which were broken and I replaced them with the black plastic but the brass would last longer. Are they interchangable?

Yes T.H. You can swap the brass "TOP" for the black plastic ones.However,direct interchang between the two types may not be possible.-FWIW---Keoke

My BJ8 had the original carbs on when I got it and they had the brass hex damper screws - car went down the line in early September 1964. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

I think that the HD8 carb dampers on the BJ8 are externally vented. The brass caps that I have seen are for internally vented carbs & would need to be drilled for the external vent. Just make the vent hole the same size & location as the plastic one.

Andrew, mine was late October '63. I assumed the black dampers were original. Interesting.
Dave, were the diameter of the brass "bead" the same and what about the length of the shaft? Any clues?
You guys are great. How else can one get my dumb questions answered?

The brass dampers should be the same for all 8 size SU's as far as fit & function. With the exception of the vent arrangement. I don't know about the brass bead. It has to be big enough to cover the hole. Older Jag HD8's had the brass caps. Someone in the Eastern US was advertising brass damper caps that you have to add (transplant) your inside parts to. Can't find it now.

I assume that SU went to the externally vented plastic caps to save a drilling operation in the cover which is required for the original brass item. Or maybe plastic is cheaper than brass.

My understanding is that the internally vents carbs were specified as 'dust sealed' so the pressure on the upper side of the piston vents through the carb whereas the externally vented (ie hole in top cap) were standard.

If you have carbs with the 45 degree drilling AND top vent holes apparently it can cause problems. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

Where can I find out if my 64 BJ8 (built in 63)had brass or plastic? I purchased the brass set cheap. They are vented as are the plastic ones. I like keeping the car stock.
