Brake Servo

Bonjour to all of you.

I have started to work on my BJ8, a lot of work to be performed before I can drive it.

I am slowly taking it in parts, and trust me, it is not a piece of cake when it comes to unscrewing parts. Almost all the screws are rusted... a good pleasure...

Any how, I have a question. I thought that all BJ8s came with a servo brake, but on mine there is none. Was it an option at that time? The plate number shows 30362 from 1964?

I am wondering if the previous owner did make a change, so any advice is welcome.

Thanks for your reply
Hervé

Contact the BJ8 registry. He may have your BJ8 on file.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember hearing if you removed the servo you needed to put a different, pre-servo, master cylinder on. Different bore sizes.

Yep , When I had Four-in-tune convert Mine Tom used a BJ7 non-power MC. Works great. Easier pedal modulation control.

"Pedal Modulation" (Sorry for hijacking this thread) I was asked to test drive a newbies BJ8 last week at the Healey Rendezvous in Sooke, BC. I just about put us through the windshield when I first stepped on the brakes. It was instantaneous. I quickly learned to modulate the pedal. I don't know anything about BJ8 servos so I naturally assumed the P.O. had installed an incorrect aftermarket servo. Another told us it was because the servo was going bad. And yet one other person said that it would cost around $1000 for parts and labor to install a new servo. Yikes! Is this all true?

Last I checked--a few years ago--rebuild kits were $100 give-or-take, depending on completeness. Figure the cost for a couple cylinder relinings, depending on who you use, and possibly some expensive dry lube to coat the inside of the big vacuum/air chamber and a few hours' time. I think it's doable for a meticulous shadetree mechanic who understands how they work.

I've never heard of them failing by working too well, usually they'll just lose power and/or or cause brake fluid to be sucked into the intake manifold, causing white smoke out the tailpipes (or a new pope). If you're used to non-boosted systems you might overbrake at first, but nothing like you described; they aren't as effective as most modern assisted systems. You can test functioning by standing on the pedal as you start the engine, as the engine develops some vacuum the pedal will go down an inch or so; mine has a noticeable 'pop' on the passenger footwell when they're applied.

Thanks o all of you

I will be installing an brake servo aftermarket available from Moss. I will be upgrading the complete brake system at the same time. Will let you know how the result is.

From now on, I am dismenteling the rear and front wings and all screws are well rusted,; in some area, it is a nightmare....
