Turn signals and engine running on

First question: My turn signals don't always work on my 79B. When they don't funcion I can usually get them to work if I turn on the emer. flashers for a moment. Is there a relay for these? Or is there a problem with the actual stalk switch?

Second Question: My car recently passed the emission inspection here in Lake County, Illinois (woo hoo!). However, the car still runs on every time I turn it off. It occasionally backfires as well. What's the first place to check for this? I've replaced the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, and took apart the carb to replace the o-ring and nothing has changed. Is this going to damage the engine?

I had this problem on my 75 B. Turned out to be the contacts on the stalk. Before you pull it odd though check the contact on the lower end where it attaches to the harness.

There is an anti-run on valve in the emission system. Check if it is working.

Also run-on can be induced because you have plug in something else in the ignition circuit. I had that problem when an after market radiator fan was plugged to the same circuit as ignition.

Thanks for the advice. As for the turn signals, I just wanted to clean the hazard flasher switch and the rocker part just popped off in my hand. Now the turn signals don't work at all. I'm not an electrical expert, but are these wired serially so that if the switch is gone, the flashers won't work at all? That would help my troubleshooting.

I'd have to look at a schematic to be certain (and I think it's been posted somewhere on this board) but at least on mine the turn signals are routed through the hazard switch. I believe all cars are set up similar.

The run-on could also be a bad coil....thats what happened with the LE last summer, it would back fire and run-on when it was warm, replaced the coil and it was 100% better.
