trim piping

One of this weekend's projects on my BJ8 is to install new piping on the shut pillar (where door latch is). The questions are:
Does the alum. metal plate need to be shimmed to not show a bend or will it sit flat (do to the thickness of the flang on the piping)? Will shimming effect the door latching?
Is it necessarey to use adhesive to hold the piping in place or is the pressure enough from the plate and screws holding it? If so, what is recommended?
Thanks for the help

No shim is required, it will sit flat enough.

You'll need adhesive (contact cement) to keep the piping in place during assembly. I don't think the pressure would be even enough to hold the piping in place without any adhesive.

Randy is correct in both cases. I would only add that sometimes it's necessary to trim (file) the aluminum plate to allow the trim piece to fit perfectly. Have plenty of the tiny screws on hand as you will most assurdley ruin some. Make sure you have the correct drill bit or they (trim screws) will never go in.
Good Luck.

Okay, I got one side done but there must be an easier way to adjust the door latch. I spent two hours re-aligning the **** thing. Tomorrow I'll attempt the other side. Any help or pointers? The one I just did is hard to close.

Patience is indeed a virtue. You will percevere. It's mind over matter. Don't be discouraged you will win. I found that by loosening the nut behind the fender just slightly, then gently closing the door, then retighten the bolt does help. Also, after driving the car I had to readjust. Fun isn't it?
Did you find the screws you were looking for?

Thanks. No I haven't found the screws yet. However the problem with the alignment was actually the little spring device at the top of the mechanism. Greased it and played with it and got it to move smoothly. Its the small stuff every time!
