Wedge TR7 Petrol Injection system...

OK...Now that I have my FREE TR7 at home (thanks Cheapsnake!), I'd like to know your opinions on the factory fuel injection system.

Do any of you have any idea how complicated these systems are and are they DIY friendly?

I do have a Haynes manual that came with the car...anybody ever worked on 'em?

Thanks.

its just a bosch j-tronics system, as used in volvos, etc. not much you can do if you want to try and make it a high performance system.

I have a F/I TR7. As Philman says, it's just a Bosch Jetronics system; was used on literally millions of VWs, Beemers, and Volvos in the late 70s-80s. Most parts for it are readily available (not always from the normal LBC outlets, and not always listed for TR7s).

It is fairly easy to work on and troubleshoot, and is fairly "bulletproof." By that I mean that when it works, it works, and there's not the continual tinkering done on carbs.

The one piece of advice is get a Bentley manual (make sure it's the one that covers all model years). It has probably a 20 page section on the F/I system, including about a 3 page troubleshooting matrix.

Granted, if you want a faster TR7, the F/I system is rather limited (although I've heard TSI can reprogram the ECU is you do make changes, like higher compression or a hotter cam). However, most people that want a faster TR7 drop either a V6 or V8 into it.

borders, amazon.com, etc also sell a pretty good book on bosch fuel injection. while it doesn't actually talk about the tr-7 version it does a good job describing the k-tronics and j-tronics versions.

When you are ready to drop back and punt, send me a PM. I have at least half a dozen carb intake systems down in the basement. The slick set up is to throw away the Zeniths and source a set of Datsun 240z carbs. Add a cam and some headers, and you got a TR7 that will really scoot. The big problem with the ZS carbs is the idle/auto choke. They go bad. A manual choke goes a long way towards making them drivable.

Thanks for the link Mickey...

I washed some of the grime and mold off of the car this morning...maybe tonite I'll get a battery in it and see what happens.

The good news is the cooling system still had pressure in it..it hasn't seen the road since 1984 but, I was told, it still ran about one year ago.

May the fun begin...
