Evaluating a 1981 TR7 with air and the compressor is shot. Looking for a source for a compressor and a price. No one around here can help or even offer a substitute.

GM version, will get back to you. Think it is a pretty standard compressor.
I think some are even using a Porsche one that is smaller and less taxing

Isn't it the same one-lung York that all the other Triumphs use? Bet your local independent parts store could send it out for rebuild.

Get me the number and the manufacturer from the compressor that you have. I'm in the business and we are in Akron. Write to me at jerryvv at roadrunner dot com with your phone number etc and I'll track one down for you.

TR7 and TR8s don't use the same compressors. Don't get the two confused. The TR7 used that square aluminum one. You can always score a used one. If you pay $100 for a working one, you've paid too much.

I bought a chrome plated Sanden style compressor from an ebay company named Coldmaster for $89, then a $35 adapter plate and replaced the York. I also had new hoses made locally with the low pressure fitting on one. High side went on the dryer. So far it is working great, although I can still tell when the AC is on (power loss).

Jerry it will take me a while. It's 1&1.2 hours from my house. Maybe the guy that has the car will look for me. Where is the number located on the compressor because I got the impression from him that he does not work on cars? Also I'm sure it's the original York compressor.

I don't know where the number would be but there should be a tag somewhere on the Compressor. Also if it is the York then the way to go is the adapter plate and the Sanden replacement. If those can be bought for $89.00 and you want inexpensive then do what DanB did above. I'd need to check but if it can be bought for $89.00 that's below my cost. It must be a rebuild or used that's been dolled up. $89.00 is pretty inexpensive for an A/C Compressor. At any rate if you'd like a new one at a reasonable price get in touch via my e-mail at the above address in my previous e-mail.

Dan- Can you post pics of your setup? Also, did you source the adapter plate from them as well? I just looked at their store on ebay. It looks like they get random stuff in and re-sell it.

Thanks.

As long as we're on the subject, does anyone have any objective data on how much "better" the Sanden is? Lots of folks assert that it takes less power, but no one seems to know how much less, or how much the reduced power relates to reduced displacement.

I can't find the reference anymore, but I recall seeing a quote that the TR7 compressor used 13 hp, and that the TR8 (a Delco) used 3 hp.

Could be hooey for all I know, though.

Sure, I'll take some pics and get them on here, probably this evening. The compressor looked new when I got it, but it probably came from China or someplace. I agree, $89 is ridiculous. No, I got the adapter plate off ebay, but not from Coldmaster. There are several people selling those. The hoses were the hard part, since the connectors on the compressor are different than the York, and there are no fittings either, so I had to get one made into the hose. I think I have about $100 in the hoses. The hose connection at the firewall was pretty difficult to get sealed, and I wasted a charge that way, Finally I pumped the system full of air and let it sit a day to see if it would leak down any before I pulled a vacuum on it and recharged it. This is a job that is not as simple as it sounds, but just takes perseverance.
