I installed my new TRF steering rack today and finished the front end, radiator, etc. I then stuck my wheels on the car (its on jack stands) and spun the rear tires. I then put the car in gear and spun the rear wheels again. They spun!!! What's going on? The u-joints are contected (they didn't spin). Am I missing something? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Have someone hold the opposite side wheel while you try to spin one- if it still spins then yes I think you have a problem, but otherwise I think its just the differential doing what it should be doing. With that I'll shut up and let the folks who actually know exactly how the differential works chime in (I've never fiddled with them)!

If I understand your question correctly.
They should be able to spin with the transmission in neutral.
Even if the tranny is in gear spinning one wheel would spin the opposite wheel in the other direction due to the differential which is how it's supposed to work.
Or am I completely missing the point on your post?

It's supposed to do that. Notice that the other wheel will be turning in the opposite direction.

Larry-

That's the design and intent of the differential - it lets the rear wheels rotate at different speeds. If they didn't, every time you turned a corner you'd have some wheel hop and tire wear. Some mechanical engineering genius originally came up with the design - I always wanted to tear one apart just to fully see and therefore understand its workings but as yet I haven't had the opportunity.

The Differential in my Tr6 was filled with oak sawdust
and cedar wood chips. The PO told me that was the
recommended procedure since the TR differentials have
an original design flaw and leak too much oil.

The sawdust and cedar chips provide a form of
"dry" lubrication that does not leak. The PO
recommended changing the sawdust and chips every
10,000 miles.

Of course the Crypt Car died after only 67 miles
so I guess I have many miles remaining on my sawdust
and wood chips lubrication system!!

I've heard that used to be a common trick that some used cars dealers would use in a failing gearbox to mask problems.

SoCal - Re differentials: Stare at the exploded view in a manual or the Moss catalog awhile & you'll either understand how they work or get a headache. If the head still feels fine then stare at an exploded view of the overdrive unit, that one will give you a headache.

Ever read "The Grapes of Wrath?" There is the chapter where the used car salesman is selling "Jalopies" and filling the worn out differentials with sawdust to stop the noise.

Dale did you replace the differential yet? I have a sneaking suspicion that sawdust in not going to help you reach 10,000mi
