Sick, Addicted, Twisted, Just bought # 10

I must be sick addicted or twisted!

So this guy restores his 1973 MGB, had it since high school. New motor, upholstry, new top, tires, Even put a Aluminum head on the engine!

Then, gives it to his teenage daughter for her sweet 16.
2 weeks later she wrecks it and there it sits.

I come along 8 years later, check out the car, the chassis is worthless. When she hit, she diamonds the frame, chain reaction throughout the whole car. I point this out to him as he thinks it will just take $200 bucks and a frame alignment to fix (don't know what planet he was on thinking that way). An his wife comes out and says "Hey, a pair of these seats just sold on Ebay for $600!"

I stop talking and walk away, get in my truck and leave.

Just found the car on craigslist, called him up, ask "is your wife around?" He says no, come get the car.

So here it is, #10 in my collection of MGB's, a 1973, production date 8/72.

Parts is parts. Still plenty of reasonable bits on that car. Heck, I'd take the door cards (mine have speaker holes). Seats look solid under the dust. If the engine's still good then that's a real steal.

Is that your stuff in the background?

Why do some parents indulge their children with sportscars at age 16?

They need an old beater land yacht for their own protection.

I'll betcha the little darlin' was talking/texting on the cell phone when she rear-ended the car at the stop light in front of her.

End of rant.

That damage looks to be fom impacting a VERY solid "immoveable object" rather than another vehicle. Eight years ago it may have been cell 'phone, doubt "texting" was that available. She likely reefed it after losing control, may even have been from avoidance of a head-on.

Tho I totally agree a newly licensed driver should get an expendable vehicle as a trainer. Preferrably one new enough to have air bags.

The PO of my TR8 was approached by a buyer that wanted to give it to his 16 year old son. The father was not a car guy, his son wanted a "fast sports car" and they read that this little car had a V8. Since I now own the car the PO obviously didn't sell it to them. Flat out refused is what he did, I actually bought it for a much lower price than what this father had offered. The PO had owned the TR8 for 25 years and did not want to it wrecked or mistreated.

It seems counter to the desire to bring younger people into the fold, but there is a big difference of an involved parent bringing in an interested teen than simply giving the teen the keys to an old and cute sports car.

His daughter hit the neighbors brick mailbox post all by herself, she did not need any help from anybody.

I have 2 teenage daughters.
They drive cars that look like they were parked by braille (with airbags).
I bought them that way for the simple reason that:
1, there can be no more harm done to them that has already not been done.
2, they are mechanically sound, and the stereo works, clean inside too.
3, more likely not to be broken into at school.
They will "inherit" a MGB when the time is right.

Doug,
yes all the stuff in the background is mine, trucks, trailers,
cars, 4 women to answer too and a mother-in-law across the street.

ANd here is a photo of the aluminum head that was on the car,
the previous owner had a thought to part out the car,
then lost the nerve.
Upon inspecting the motor, there is hardly any carbon deposits
on the top of the pistons, thus leading me to believe him when
he told me it had a new motor before she wrecked it.

Dave,

We used to go to Hayfork for the autocrosses. They were
held in one of the suburbs of Hayfork - out at the Fairgrounds.
Not much there now that the Forest Service pulled out,&
the logging's gone.
Did you know Wayne Peak?

Doug:

When I lived in Hayfork, I was in a , shall we say
clouded state of mind. I went up there to build log cabins,
grow mary jane plants, drink keg beer, be a free spirit,
and swim neked in the laked in from of the cabin.

Then I grew up.
Weaverville, Douglas City, The log mill, Waynes peak,
its all a blur (but a good blur cuz I sure had fun)!

Went through there 20 years ago to sho my new bride
the Natural Bridge where the last Indian Massacre was.

The place looked sad then, I can only imagin now
