Motor and Gearbox removal

Hardly got to drive the car this year due to a busy work schedule and haven't even put it away for the winter.
Having a couple of free days coming up, so thought I would replace the gearbox due to no synchro in 3rd gear.
What other items should I do while gearbox is out. Clutch was new 2500miles ago by previous owner.
Also any other hints or trciks for removal and reinstall.

I can't add much, but it might be worth considering a rebuild from These Guys if you haven't done one before.

They also have decent prices on trans parts (they have rebuild kits for $140).

I do have a gearbox to install, just wondering if I should do anything else while I have the motor out. I think I remember throw out bearing on clutch as one thing.

It's a good time to take a look at the clutch and release bearing. I know it's fairly new, but still worth checking. You'll need an alignment tool to get the disk centered when you put it back on. I don't know what these cost; I made my own on a lathe in about 20 minutes.

The friend who was helping me install my engine did it by eye. I have also seen an article on making one using two sockets - one the diameter of the flywheel hole - the other the diameter of the clutch hole - bolted together.

It can indeed be done by eye, I never had an alignment tool until the last few years.

Bromstick handle always worked for me. At least for VW's. Haven't changed out a Spridget Clutch yet. Although the 1275 I have sitting in the back of my garage for close to 10 years now had a new clutch installed, I'm betting that I'll find the disc has rusted together to the flywheel. Pretty high humidity levels in the back of the garage in the summertime. Will be time to pull it back apart when the engine gets a rebuild. Any trick for getting it apart should I find parts stuck together with the engine outside of the car?

Replace radiator hoses and have the Rad cleaned. Resurface flywheel if needed.

Thanks all. Never thought about changing out the radiator hose. I know they are the original hoses.
Going to start tomorrow if I get some quiet time.

Hit it with a BFH or a claw hammer. Start easy.
