TR4/4A TR4 wiper motor rubber mount installation.

Any thoughts or advice on installing the rubber mounts for the wiper motor into the bracket? The replacement mounts are much harder than the originals and I can see no way of forcing them into the holes. I could cut them in half but would prefer installing them properly. Thank you!

Hi Matt,

Have you tried heating them slightly with a heat gun or dropping them in boiling water to soften them ?

Thanks David, I did try the boiling water with no luck, but maybe a heat gun will do it. I found an old thread discussing this issue and the ideas were soapy water, WD40 or silicone grease. Soapy water, glycerin and WD40 have not worked for me. I even tried to pull them in using a bolt, washer, socket setup.

I really think the rubber mounts I have are a different durometer than those discussed in that 10 year old thread. These must be much harder. I searched your videos to see what you did and you were smart and didn’t replace them :D

I’ll keep on it and will let the forum know what ultimately works. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes Matt, mine were not in too bad condition so I didn’t replace them. They do look like a bugger to get in.

Would it be possible to make them a little smaller by sticking a wooden dowel in them, fitting them into a drill and sand them down dimensionally? Just a thought.

This was one of the most frustrating jobs I did during my restoration. Its like trying to put a nickel in a dime size hole. I eventually got them in buy just forcing the lip in with a small screwdriver. Granted they didn't go in unmolested, the screwdriver would occasionally poke through the rubber but I got them in.
 
I just slit mine. Works fine, no one would know the difference if I didn't tell them.
 
Randall has the simple solution. After repainting my bracket I will slit the rubber in half horizontally and install it that way. Onward to the next task of reassembly! Thank you all for your input!

On my TR3 mounts, I used red rubber grease. Eventually, after a lot of struggling, I got them in. I got the new rubber mounts from Moss.
