MGB MGB dash

The dash in my '68 MGB GT is developing the usual family of cracks on the top and in various places on the face. Also, the radio surround is showing cracks.

I'll probably have to bite the bullet and buy replacements. Is there anything I can do to prevent cracking of the new one in the future, or is that why there are so many places selling them? The car is usually parked inside, so it isn't being baked here in the Indiana desert.

Thanks

I would hope the new repros(full dash replacements) are a better or a more modern material than the one that was originally on your car. Plus being inside will help. I have seen several new dashes that were installed poorly. Maybe its the fit of the new ones or the installer. I have not done one so no install info from me! Bob

The hardest part of installing a new dash cover is removing the old one from the steel backing. They don't sell a complete dash with the steel back already on it that I know of. Pealing off the old cover is a pain. The back plate must be completely stripped and should be primed and painted to prevent further rusting. The new dash cover usually has to be trimmed, filed or sanded in the back and fitted and re fitted until it fits properly. The instrument area is critical and the foam backing can not be too thick otherwise the gages and switches won't fit right. Follow the instructions to the letter and you will be very pleased. Remember that the old dash is decades old, so don't compare it's composition with the new ones. Just one thing to remember, make sure the new cover fits the way it's supposed to BEFORE gluing! After it's glued, it's all over. PJ

When you do remove the black vinyl, do not remove the hard fiberglass backing.
