MGA Merkur Tranny in an MGA

That's the unit Moss sells for the MGB..a T-9.

Don't know why it would not work with an MGA...with some alterations and adaptations.

Page down, it lists an "MGA/MGB" conversion and this uses the Type 9 which is the XR4Ti transmission.

My only fear of the T-9 is the potential scarcity of parts here in the US. There was not that many Merkurs with the T-9 here...it's a more common gearbox in Europe (Ford Sierra).

I would be more tempted to look at the Nissan 280Z/ZX 5-speed transmission and Rivergate conversion kit available.

The T-9 is good for 200+ horsepower so breakage shouldn't be a problem. Taylor Race Engineering has parts listed in their catalog for the T-9.

That does not mean that something cannot or will not break. And we all know that just because a part is listed in a catalog does not mean that it is stocked or available.

Why not just find an early non-synch MGB OD trans. That can also be fitted.

I installed one of these transmissions in my TD and Moss has made a commitment to stock parts for it for the foreseeable future. I can't imagine that you will ever actually need any parts running it in an MGA. The Merkur had a far more powerful engine and this is a really nice piece of equipment. The Moss item is a bit pricey but it went in without a hitch and works great.

I agree with these comments...but I tend to ask myself "what if" a lot.

I've a friend here in town that just installed the T9 tranny from Moss into his 1972 MGB tourer...as well as a supercharger. Too snowy and slick to get it out for a true test run yet...I'm looking forward to it!

Rick, asking "what if alot" somehow seems incompatible with MG ownership I thought it was all about blind faith or at least it seems that way in my case. Seriously, this is a modern transmission made from modern alloys. It should be nearly bullit proof in our cars. Paul.

I wouldn't necessarily call it modern. Its based on the Type E 4-speed that dates back to the late sixties and the five speed (Type-9) has been in use since the early eighties (2.8 litre Capri's in 1982 before the Merkur/Sierra).

The T9's are very easy to find in breaker yards in the UK but are a little more scarce over here. Since we didn't really get Mk1&2 Escorts or any of the later (5-Speed)Capri's we primarily have to look for Merkurs. Should be very serviceable if you don't mind sourcing parts from the UK if you find parts harder to find here.
