General TR Identifing the tranny number on my j type

Looking in the catalogs to order parts for my J type overdrive tranny gearbox the numbers aren't jiving. The location diagrams show the "CD" number on the left side of the tranny above the lever for the clutch throw out bearing. Well mine isn't there and is on the opposite side on top and starts with a CC not the CD as describe in the catalogs for TRs. I saw this in the TR6 that it came out of but that's no guarantee it's from a 6. Stag had J types too but the solenoid is at an angle. So what do I have here or am I looking at the wrong numbers?

According to Moss, the CC prefix would indicate 73-74 TR6. I've heard that they moved the number later on, but my early CC-series box has it on the clutch shaft boss.

Also, the Stag J-type has the solenoid fully horizontal. I believe it was the Stag A-type that had it somewhat angled.

I don't understand the question. Most factory part numbers don't have letters at all, but if they do, the letters are important. The two leading letters indicate the type of part (eg nut or bolt), while the numbers give the size. So, for example, an HB0808 is a 5/16 NF hex head bolt, 1" long (under the head). There is a listing at

Generally if the number is all digits, then there is something special about the part and it should not be substituted with common hardware store parts. Stronger material, precision shank diameter, unusual head size are just few of the possibilities.

Oh, wait, I think I get it. You're wondering how to order, for example, a NKC0053 filter. For the part numbers that start with 3 letters, TRF drops the leading zeros. So, it's listed under NKC53.

We're talking tranny parts here. Say if I want to order a synchro ass'y set. In the Moss catalog it says if your tranny is between CD2021234 and CD3000000 then order this part number. No where do they list CC# for trannys. There is a CF though. So that's why I asked if you drop the CD and just use the numbers. I am going to need a bunch of parts too that's why I ask.

Ah, I see now. Somehow the note that is in the PDF version I use didn't get copied to the web site. I think it gives a better answer, which is that all CC gearbox numbers are later than all CD numbers, and earlier than all CF numbers.
