Loctite weatherstrip adhesive

Just got my new weatherstrip material. It's rubber extrusion, with a slight "dusty" feel. Rub your finger on it and you pick up a dark gray smudge.

Loctite black weatherstrip adhesive instructions:

1. Clean surfaces thoroughly. Use abrasives to remove any powdery mold release from new weather-stripping.
2. Apply a thin, even film to both surfaces. Allow to dry.
3. Apply a second thin coat of adhesive to sections of weather-stripping not over 3 feet long.
4. Bond immediately.

Two questions:
1. how the heck do you "use abrasives to remove any powdery mold release ..."?

2. what is "apply a second thing coat to sections not over 3 feet long"? That implies you only put "fresh" adhesive on short sections. The first coat was allowed to dry.

Help!

Tom
PS - I called Loctite USA customer assistance. Spent 30 minutes on hold. I finally got a service rep. First thing he said was "Are you in Canada?" I said no. He said "Then you have to call our industrial division. Let me give you their phone number." good grief.

"Use abrasives ..." ==> Rub the surface of the extrusion that you are trying to bond with a Scotch-Brite or whatever until all the powdery stuff is gone and you've exposed fresh, solid rubber. Usually it's very obvious, as the rubber itself is a dark black, while the mold release is lighter in color. But when you've got it clean, your finger won't pick up that "dark gray smudge" from the cleaned surface.

"Apply a second thin coat to sections not more than 3 feet long" ===> After the initial coat has dried on both surfaces, you add a second coat to a short section and then immediately bond that section. The point is that, if you apply a second coat over more than 3 feet at a time, it will already be partly dry (and hence not bond as well) by the time you start sticking them together. So if you are working with a long strip of material, you apply the second coat to the first foot or two, then bond that part. Apply second coat to the next foot or two, bond that part. Lather, rinse and repeat until you've done the entire strip.

Thanks Randall. Never did this before. Now it makes sense (which is more than I can say about Kierkegaard).

I never used Loctite adhesive, probably too new, I always used 3M Super weatherstrip adhesive. Never had an issue with it. I use Loctite on threads, didn't even know they had adhesive products. PJ

What I use.

I had trouble with the 3M weatherstirp adhesive releaseing in the HOT weather around here. But I did not scatch the surface with a scotch brite pad first. Might have to try that. Since the Locktite is Black, that is an advantage.
