The weather has been really nice lately, and I'm getting a little antsy for the trip to Klamath Falls in my Healey this coming July, so Wednesday I did something "Healey-related" and went to three different bookstores in the LA area and ended up buying four interesting publications:
At Autobooks, 3524 W. Magnolia in Burbank, a pretty well-known place, I found the March 2002 issue of Practical Classics magazine, with a cover story entitled "50 Years of Austin-Healey." I had ordered this issue from EWA last year, but they ran out before processing my order, so I was happy to find this copy.
I also found an interesting copy of Road and Track, dated September 1955 with a cover story of "Le Mans 1955: Racing's Darkest 24 Hours". On a lighter note, there is an article on Disneyland's Autopia cars - weight 475, engine 1 cyl. 4 cycle, governed speed 11 mph, list price - not for sale. Also included in the issue is an article entitled "Testing the 100S - a Competition Car at a Reasonable Price" - oh, for the good old days!
A little further down the street at 1508 W. Magnolia is Fred Chaparro's Automotive Books. Fred runs an interesting store and has a lot of great car-related stories to tell, even though he claims he's not a "car guy". He sells shop manuals, used books, posters, and race programs, and seems to know the location of each and every one. Next door, his wife sells used automotive magazines three days a week. At Fred's, I found Automobile Quarterly - Vol. 24, No. 4 with an article entitled "Donald Healey: His Own Way". This was a great find - I'd been looking for it for years.
From Heritage Classic Motorbooks (right next to Heritage Classic Motorcar Company) on Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood, I bought a copy of "The Fabulous Fifties - Sports Car Races in Southern California" by Art Evans. I'm going to an event on Saturday, a concours of sorts, where, to be eligible for an award of sorts (this is a very casual event) you need to prove your car or it's marque was raced in the Southern California area during the 50's, and there on page 207 is a Healy Hundred on the race track at Willow Springs - that ought to get me in! This is a really interesting book, with history, pictures, programs, and race results from all the venues of the 50's - Riverside, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Willow Springs, Del Mar, Torrey Pines, Pomona and more, and many famous names such as Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Ken Miles, Max Balchowsky, Bob Bondurant, Dick Guldstrand, Briggs Cunningham, John von Neumann, Bill Pollack, Vasek Polak to name a few.
All in all, a stellar day for my car book collection, which leads me to believe that maybe one day I'll find that Super Profile Austin Healey Hundred I've been looking for!
