Front Brake Hose Wear

I replaced my front brake hoses a couple of years ago on my phase 1 BJ8. Today I pulled the left front wheel to examine the front brake pads. To my concern, I noticed considerable wear on the front brake hose from rubbing. The front shock absorber lever arm where it contacts the rebound buffer apparently rubs against the brake hose at a point about 3 inches from where the flexible hose connects to the brake pipe at the bracket. I see no other possible routing for the brake hose as it must pass under the lever arm and connect at the bracket on the caliper. I am not sure if the caliper bracket could be bent to force the flexible hose away from the shock arm or if slightly shorter brake hoses would solve the problem. This obviously could be a serious problem should the hose wear through. Suggestions???? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone tell me the correct length of the front brake hoses. I believe my replacements were from Moss, but their after market ones.
Thanks,

Hi Shorn,
Here’s a photo of how my brake hose was routed for comparison. I have a spare set of new hoses I can measure for you. ( I saw them when I was looking for the convertible top shims)

Greg,
Thanks, that helps. Yours are obviously shorter. Yours bend almost immediately at the bracket. Mine seems to rise 2-3 inches before bending and are thus rubbing against the shock arm. Guess I better get some new shorter hoses.

Hi Shorn,
Another thought, is the hose attached to this bracket?

Hi Shorn, Yes the tubing attached to the bracket shown by Greg can be distorted contributing to your problem. New brake hoses from moss and I suspect from others also are shorter than the originals. Consequently, to protect them I go to a Jaguar dealer and get their coiled abrasion protectors and fit them over the brake line. They are made using a very abrasion resistant plastic type material that is formed into a springs shape. Very easy to thread over the brake line In situ.---Fwiw---Keoke

Keoke,
Tried the local Jag dealer up here and they do not carry the springlike protective material separately. They said it comes with their brake line. I know what you are talking about though and will check other sources.

Hi Shorn,
I purchased these hoses from Moss about 5 years ago, but they seemed to fit the same as the original ones. I measured what I consider the installed length, which does not include the threaded ends. The threads would be on the other side of the brackets and wouldn’t effect the area you are having trouble with. With disclaimer in place, the front hoses are 11 3/8” long from outside of nut to outside of nut. I have included the rear brake hose in this photo (the bottom one) for comparison. It is a little shorter, measuring 11 1/8” from outside of nut to outside of shoulder.

Interestingly enough, I pulled the passenger front wheel this afternoon. There is no issue with that brake hose at all. It does not appear to be able to rub against the lever arm. I assume the connection on one side of the car to be the same as the other, just the mirror image. In any event, I will be replacing the driver's side brake hose as the wear is quite noticeable. Perhaps I somehow got a longer hose on that side only. Passenger side measures about 11 1/2, trying to measure it in place. I have to jack the car back up to measure the drivers side.
