Does anyone know the color(s) of a BJ8 wiring harness? I'm talking about the tracers...red & white or red & yellow.
I'm having sections of my harness rebraided.

Speaking of re-braiding. I'm preparing to do a full restoration of my BT7. It's been a reliable driver for the past 52 years. No electrical issues. But I would like to refresh the entire car. Anyone have any thoughts about the reasonableness of just having the original harness re-braided vs. installing a brand new complete harness. Cost is not an issue. Do wires wear out? Are modern harnesses better than the original ones? Can I expect 50 plus years out of the replacements? Well maybe not me but the next owner....

I have removed small sections of wiring from my BJ7 and found the insulation to be a tad brittle, in particular the tails to the head lamps, and the wiring down the steering column these I renew as I go around the car. I have also noticed how stiff the wiring feels running along the chassis from front to back of the car, that is still in position but I have new wires to replace them at some time.

I think that it would be wiser to go with new. This is my personal opinion.

"brittle" wires can be replaced. I did a couple of mine. At the very least, the red wire that goes from the front to the back usually is "melted". I replaced that wire and added an additional wire for future use. The headlamp pigtails are sold separately.

Wires can get brittle and those need replaced. I've heard good and not so good about replacement harnesses. Might depend on whom you buy them from. I've used Rhode Island Wiring Service for my rebraiding of my main harness back in '88. I was happy with their work. They have since, over the years, got hold of more Healey original harnesses and can do "show car", concours specs. Rebraiding is $4.50 per foot plus shipping,

Hello Patrick,

Have you an owners/factory manual?
Good to have on hand.
I have two manuals, one for inside and one for the garage.
I'm familiar with the individual wires but the actual colors of the cloth braiding of the harness exterior covering is what I'm needing.
Thanks,

A reliable wire harness facility such as Rhode Island will know the correct color codes to use.Yes wire harnesses wear out and best replaced with new ones I am not sure the standard after market harness is that much of an up grade but a mew harness and braiding will improve the electrical system significantly

Thanks for the info! That's exactly what Rhode Island Wiring Service had on their specs. They said that over the years they received "original" harnesses for Healey's that still had the original braiding and were able to verify the specs.

Oeer!

Did not realize that the various area harness braidings had colours in them, mine on the BJ7 seem to be either there in a sort of an allover charcoal grey or missing in patches along the length.!
