Got the old girl, A BJ7, is back on the road after the clutch rebuild and then the head rebuild - this was unexpected see previous posts. Drove 60 miles this morning at a good pace to show the chaps at Heathrow airport where I work on the new terminal.
Looked into the engine bay on arrival /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif only to find that the rocker cover could not have been tightened down enough and the Black Gold, - Texas tea, was splattered over the underside of the bonnet ( hood)(oops). I Have now tightened the cover down and will see how things are on the return journey. Apart from that, the journey was great, the engine was sweet and the exhaust note just right. Clutch slip is now a thing of the past. Hurrah

bobh, i also own a 63 bj7, nice to hear youve got her back on the road, mine is now awaiting an engine reinstall and cant wait to drive "the beast" again, side note : i was chief flight engineer for an oil company and would fly a g-4 into heathrow very often. cheers. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Just a note to say that tightening the rocker cover did the trick, but I think that I am going to have to rebuild the engine shortly. 1 litre of oil in 120 miles is a bit much, even taking into account the loss through the cover, and fuel consumption was between 8 - 9 gallons - a tad on the heavy side, I was expecting something like 6 gallons or better. I am going to re-tune the carbs and see if that makes a difference. The engine rebuild will have to wait.

Hi Bob, How about telling us what the oil pressure was running at speed. Fuel consumption should be somewhere in the 16 -to- 20 Miles/Gal range.---Keoke

Hi Keoke,

Well the fuel appears to be in the order of 13 - 15 miles to the gallon, for me that is town driving rate. In my first car a 100/6 with a fully bored out block I was getting 23 on a run - 13 around town, but that was with a fully reconditioned engine, this one is not - - yet.

After the oil change the pressure on brand new Millers 20 - 50 oil was up around 65 but dropped back after 30 minutes once the engine was hot. Now it runs at around 45 - 50 when hot at 2000 + revs and above. For sure I think I need to rebush the tappets, that will improve the pressure, but without a doubt the engine is burning some, and of course it leaks a drop. You can tell that the crank case is pressuring up from the breather pipe, I have it loose in the engine bay at the memoment, having fitted ram pipes to the carbs, and this is a further indication that a rebore is required.
