Alternative carburettors on Healey

I subscribe to a magazine which is called Retro Cars. It is a magazine for modified classics. On several on their cars they fit motorcyle carburettors, probably bought from scrap yards. Typical carburettors from a 1000 cc motorcycle, fitted whith special made manifolds. Have anyone seen or tried something like that on a Healey ? Could it be an alternative to expenisve Weber carburettors ?

I’m in the process of doing that. I was hoping to fire the motor up this month, but that may not happen. Check this thread out for the unfolding story that hopefully won’t end in tragedy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'm using stock Tri-carb manifolds.1500 CFM anyone?

Naw Richard, stock carbs if rebuilt and setup properly should not cause you any trouble. The only time I touch mine are when I encounter large altitude changes.---Keoke

Actually, Mikunis are very easy to tune when they need to be, which is pretty rare. Here is a pretty cool gadget from the motorcycle world to synchronize multiple carburetors. You don’t need to remove the air cleaners and you can see what all carbs are doing at the same time. It’s also hands free so you can watch the levels as you make adjustments. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

My current carburettors (1,75 ") are ok, it leaves terrible gas milage (worst than moste Healeys). The carburettors are ok, but I think that the damper, and damper clock, damper springs, has to be changed. Have done everything, new needles, jet centering, syncronising with vacum instrument, new rubber etc. My question above was just out of curiosity.

GregW, what an impressive engine bay, and impressive setup.
Last year I fitted bolt on Mikunis instead of the Amals on my Triumph Bonneville, they work great. Great to see your project.

Hi Karl,
Way back when, I got a new Meriden Triumph Bonneville. The first thing I did was replace the Amal carbs with "good" Mikuni carbs. Much better all the way around & easier to tune. Later on, Amal started building a near copy of the Mikuni (Amal MK2) which was much improved. Only took the Brits about 25 years to get it right.
