Rebuilding a Steering Rack

Is this easily done on the bench and can a rebuild kit be purchased for it? I'm working on my rear right now and as soon as I am done will swap out the front. I have most of what I need but the Rack is just about the last peice of the puzzle.

I'm in the middle of one right now. It isn't difficult. Just follow the manual and you won't have any problems.

If your bushings are worn, you may want to have a professional press the new ones, depending on your level of machining expertise and tooling availability. Other than that, there is nothing that requires anything more than simple hand tools.

Do the directions come with a kit of some sort?

The "directions" are in your repair manual. If it helps, I can send a few photos of the process. I don't think you'll need it though. There are only a few parts in the entire thing.

Thanks Steve. Did not notice that you specified Manual. I'm assuming it's Bentley. I guess you cannot buy parts and the machinist I took it too would know what to do?

Both Bentley and Haynes should have sections on this job. You can buy all the parts from Moss, including bushings. If you need a new rack and pinion, high ratio units are available in the UK. I plan to put one in the '65 upon reassembly. That's the only car that has used grease instead of oil to lubricate the rack and it's the only one that shows wear. Never again!

Did MG ever use a High ratio unit or is this only an aftermarket thing?

I don't believe it was a factory option for road-going cars, but it may have been offered as a performance item. I don't really remember for sure. I have a quick rack in my MGC and I love it.
