What what bits specifically are the "pumpkin"

So I know that I should know this already, but....

The lump in the middle between 22 and 23, yes?

The pumpkin is technically the differential - everything but the axles. At least that's always been my take.

Since this is a semantic question, is it possible to be technically correct about a slang term? And the differential, if you're being technical, would not include the ring gear and pinion.

I think it's a casual expression for the lump in the middle and everything inside it - but since it is casual it can mean whatever the speaker wants it to mean! For example, I wouldn't buy a pumpkin without asking further questions, in case I bought a lemon!

If you bought a pumpkin, and it was a lemon, you would have egg on your face.

Since we're talking slang and semantics here... is there a difference between a pumpkin and a hogs-head? Is the hogs-head a subset of the pumpkin?

Now imagine someone reading any of these posts out of context.

Actually, a hogshead is a large cask containing liquid. In the case of beer and ale, that comes to 54 gallons (wine is 63 gallons). Of course, an ale butt is 162 gallons and a ale tun is 283 1/2 gallons.

Maybe I'll order a butt of Guinness for my next big barbeque!

So you're saying that the differential housing is full of 54 gallons of beer?

So it turns out that Don must have a good looking spouse... (ha!)

I can only imagine how much guff my daughter is going to give us when she is that big.

You must be proud of her Don.

Talking of beer, you shouldn't get a pumpkin confused with a firkin.
