Valve cover paint 1979 Midget

The wife is thinking she wants to clean up some issues in the engine compartment, one being touching up the paint on the valve cover. I couldn't find an MG orange valve cover paint on the internet. Is there a "close enough" paint such as Krylon etc?

Tony can get engine paint in what ever color is appropiate for your engine.

No touch up. Take the old paint off and prime and paint. Tony can also get new stickers for the valve cover as well as new hold down bolts and caps.

Your valve cover may have faded over time. As far as I know, 1500 valve covers were black for the home market, and red for the US-bound smogged version. (My guess: to keep them separate at the factory.) Engines were black, regardless. Unless you're gonna be showing it, I'd think any red engine paint would be close enough if you strip and repaint the whole cover.

I went to Pep Boys and found orange high heat engine spray paint. I did not rmeove the paint, prime and repaint. That would have been the smart thing to do, but mine came out pretty nice and i was really impressed with the results. I removed it covered up the holes and gave it very light coats..about 2 or 3 and let it dry about 24 hours between coats just to get a good grip on the old paint/metal

pictures stink..I'll take new ones tonight. I am going out to work on polishin gup the engine some more. I did repaint the heater box and some of the other parts with a matte paint. I thought the gloss black looked really bad...even in the original paint.

I inherited mine in blue... and gave it a quickie respray in silver. Oh well, so much for the concours... :wink:

Your before picture looks about the same as my valve cover. Looks orange to me, but then I always thought red hair isn't really red so I can see calling this shade red. We went by an auto store yesterday and found a color that is "close enough". The reason I ask is in the world of classic Mustangs that I've participated in for ~30 years, there are guys that know all the best paint codes for different surfaces. I know about Tony and will be placing an orrder with him tomorrow for other supplies.

We painted the valve cover with the Chevy Engine Orange Engine paint. Turned out a pretty good match. If you go to my link to see the pictures, the "after" picture shows a chip of the old paint beside the cover. thanks for all the tips. John
