I've Permatexed the new cork gasket to the valve cover which is off the engine while it sets up.When I install it on the head do I need to put a thin bead of sealant on the head side of the gasket or leave that dry and just rely on the compression of the two cover bolts to make the seal?

No type of adhesive. Either dry or grease. Dry would be my choice. And don't overtighten or you may deform the cover.

I like to use Hylomar on the side towards the head. Helps stop the leaks, but won't harden and tear the gasket on removal. I went for years just putting on a fresh layer when I reinstalled the cover; didn't remove the cork until I switched to Justin's silicone gasket.
