TR2/3/3A TR4 Flywheel

As always maybe been answered before but I need to clarify. I have an engine and overdrive transmission from a 64 TR4 parts car. I just removed them both and recall the PO telling me the flywheel had been lightened and a new clutch installed. I'm planning on sticking with my stock engine but would like to use this flywheel and clutch with the overdrive box. What will I need to do besides slotting the holes in the transmission mount. Will this clutch setup bolt to a stock TR3 engine. As always thanks a bunch.

I have a TR4 engine and tranny in the Blue 57 TR3. Everything fit as it was made for it. Only a TR4A has a little different clutch. You should be good to go.

Depending on the vintage of your TR3, you may need a starter to match the TR4 flywheel. (Change was originally at TS50000.) Otherwise no problem, except wiring the OD. The sliding spline in the driveshaft will accommodate the extra length.

Even if the modified flywheel & clutch were a TR4A setup (like mine), you should already have the TOB, carrier, modified front cover, etc. to go with them.

The flywheel and clutch setup I want to use came from a 64 TR4. I also have the starter. Randall what do you mean by the modified front carrier?

My point was just that "Came from" is not always the same as "is correct for". If I die tomorrow, there will likely be someone saying that my aluminum flywheel and diaphragm clutch "came from" a 56 TR3 :smile:

The TR4A switched from the 3-finger clutch pressure plate used on TR2-4, and instead used a diaphragm type plate (like the TR5/250/6). The diaphragm type plate is somewhat lighter, so there is a good chance that anyone lightening the flywheel might also change the clutch.

The diaphragm plate requires a different throwout bearing (which has a curved face), which in turn rides on a different carrier. The front cover of the transmission was also shortened, as otherwise the diaphragm fingers will close up and hit it when you press the clutch. Oddly enough, BL did not see fit to change the part number or note the difference in the parts catalogs, but the cover very definitely got slightly (about 3/8") shorter for the later clutch. The shorter cover works OK with the earlier clutch, but not the other way round.
