Does anyone have any photos or info re the shims under the fan hub main bolt? How thick do these shims need to be? Moss says "as required" but I would just like to see a good installation if anyone has a photo.
Thanks

They're only used for positioning the ears of the hand crank dog. If you'll never start the engine with the hand crank, you can leave the shims out.

I probably didn't describe it correctly, but I meant under the head of the large bolt in the end of the crankshaft. It sits deep into the hole of the fan. I don't know if you are supposed to install the hub first and then install the fan. Sounds like one of the quirky things hey would have you do, rather than install an assembly!!! I would post a photo, but I just realized, my wife took the camera to England

I think Randall has it described correctly - you can add shims so that the big bolt (dog bolt) lines up correctly if you want to hand start. Probably not important in most cases (especially a TR4) and the shims can be left out.

Yes, I think you install the hub extension first, with the bolt, then add the fan. There is a hexagonal lock plate that is added after the stock fan that "locks down" the dog bolt.

That's the one I thought you were talking about, and the one shown in the diagram above. The head of that bolt incorporates (or should, at least) the dogs for the hand crank ears to engage. If yours doesn't, you may have the bolt from a TR4A (which no longer offered a hand crank option as I recall).<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:] I don't know if you are supposed to install the hub first and then install the fan.[/QUOTE]Yes, that's right. As Randy says, there is a lock plate that goes on top of the fan and holds the big bolt.

If it's any consolation, the hub/pulley counts as an assembly, since there are actually several pieces held together by 6 bolts that all get assembled before installing on the crank
