TR2/3/3A TR3 Spin-on oil filter adapter question

I am installing one of these adapters from Moss, (Purolator filter). After removing the old canister, I looked at the existing gasket and it looks pretty good. It was not leaking. After reading posts about trouble with leaking new gaskets when these adapters are installed, I am tempted re-use the old gasket by leaving it in place and not using the new gasket from the kit. Any thoughts about this?

Thanks,

Tim

Sure, give it a try. If it does leak we're only talking about an occasional drip and it only takes a second or two to remove the adapter if you need to switch them out.

Aloha Tim,

The usual problem with a leak is that some times more than one gasket is in the groove and all are not removed before the new one is installed.

I recently had a recurring problem with a spin on oil filter adaptor and posted the question. Seems like I would only get 1500 miles and it would start leaking like a sieve. Did it twice. Some had said that a few years ago there were many defective adapter in the parts suppliers. Seems that they were not machined properly where the adapter fits up against the oil ring you are referring too. I have a lathe so I centered it the best I could and cut the machined surface back an extra 3/16 of an inch. Started it about an 1/8" off the original surface figuring that the factory machining would be much truer then what I could produce. Seems to have worked. It defiantly seats in a little deeper so it would engage the seal tighter. No leaks but I'll see in 1500 miles. O ya by the way there was a "Larryism" involved. That's me making mistakes. You might be correct about the used seals. By accident I grabbed the used seal and installed it. Got a new for the next 1500 miles. hoping I won't need it.

What filters fit the spin on for TR-2-4A? The part numbers listed on my sheet are English filter numbers. The auto parts store had no record for them

I'm using a Wix 51034. On the Wix box it lists the following cross references:

AC - PF34
Carquest - 85034
Fram - PH2825
Motorcraft - FL13B
NAPA - 1034
Purolator - L20064

Recommendation, get the Wix. Or a Hastings.

If you can't, then get the Napa Gold upgrade from the napa store. If they do not have it in the store they should be able to get the filter from their warehouse in a couple of hours.

This recommendation is based on the quality and capability of the filters

I used a mobil MI-209, which is the equivalent of the K&N HP2009 Moss Motors sells.

I completed the upgrade, and now I have some concerns:

1. The books say the 4 cylinder takes 10 pints of oil, which would be 5 quarts. I think mine took on about 5.75, I even filled the filter up before installing. Does a 42 year engine with loosened tolerances need more drink?

2. The oil is so much cleaner. Before, it was like black, the kind of dark oil that comes out of a diesel. I drove it 8 miles the morning after the change and it was chrystal clear. Even after the drive home, there was only a little contamination on the stick. Is the upgraded filter that good at cleaning the oil compared to the cartridge?

Mine also took about 5.75 quarts with the new filter, so that must be correct. I did not prefill the filter, though. Perhaps the spin-on adapter just requires more oil to fill than the old cartridge filter.

So far I am very pleased with the adapter also, no leaks and really clean oil too.

Those are Imperial pints. 10 Imperial pints is about 6 US quarts.
