TR2/3/3A TR3 overdrive trans rear speedi sleeve

Is there a speedi sleeve available for the rear seal at the drive flange on a overdrive transmission? I had to remove the trans from the car and found the rear seal leaking. I see the seals are not the same on a non overdrive car. If so do you know the part number?

I think the rear seals are the same for both types of trans. At least TRF uses the same part#-146129. The speedi sleeve may not be needed if you can seat the seal outside of the worn area. If you do need the speedi sleeve they are sold by size. Take the flange to a bearing supply co. or a "real" auto parts shop like NAPA.

Thanks Berry: The reason I mention two different seals is because Moss shows two different part numbers. I have not looked at TRF yet. It's getting hard to find a real auto parts store around here, and the local bearing shop is over 30 miles away. I guess I wanted to cheat and not do my homework thinking somebody might know a part number.

I think the output flange diameter is the same for both od and non-od gearboxes. The non-od rear seal can be used on an od box, but I believe the better od seal is wider than what is normally put on a non-od car. At least the rebuild kit I bought from the UK a few years ago had a wider seal. By wider I mean the flange area on the outer diameter of the seal was wider and fit better into the od case.

Rockauto says the sleeve is pn 99168 (National), for repairing a 1.688" diameter output flange.

Actually, TRF is suppling the same rear seal for all TR trans. A&J OD as well as non-OD. The narrower cross section might make it easier to locate the seal on an unworn area of the flange. I am not sure if there is any advantage to the wider seal.

Its probably just my personal preference - I'm so used to using Speedisleeves now I'm not worried about positioning of the seal. I like the wider flange as it give a good sealing surface against the aluminum housing - it looked to me that a narrower seal had the potential to be seated slightly tilted or might leak more easily if the aluminum housing had some scarring.

Randy thank you for the part number of the sleeve. I did a quick look at Rock auto and did not see it, bad day yesterday.The Moss book shows non OD seal 120-700 OD seal 121-125 different price to.

Berry thank you for your input. I'm going to use a sleeve and not worry about it. Sick and tired of oil leaks. My new oil galley plug is what started this whole mess. Last thing I wanted to do was remove the trans to fix it, but it was a steady drip at the back of the engine that I could not stand. At least the new ARE rear main seal is holding up fine. I used Permatex avation gasket and thread seal on the galley plug with poor results. What have the rest of you used to seal the threads on this plug. Always had good results in the past with the Permatex.
