TR2/3/3A TR3 Control Head Stator Tube Install

As the title reads it appears the slotted end fits the control head. How does the control head attach? It looks like it just rides on the tube?

Yep, just slides over the tube,but there are 3 small screws in the steering wheel that hold the control head in place and keep you from pulling it out.The slotted area is for an adjustable wheel so it can move in and out. You will pull the wiring down just enough to not be binding up.

What he said. In addition, you want to have everything properly centered (including the cancelling mechanism in the control head) when you snug the screws down.

I have a non adjustable steering set up. There seems to be a difference in the stator tubes. What should mine look like and the length?

As I recall (been a long while) both style tubes have slots, but the slot is much longer on the tube for the adjustable wheel.

Right. The slot on the non-adjustable tube is only about 3" or 4" long, the adjustable version is closer to 10". The control heads are also different, the adjustable wheel version has a much longer tube attached to it (that slides over the stator tube). As I recall, the stator tubes are about the same length.

Might not be the best approach, but what I do is assemble the tube loosely into the compression sleeve and nut on the steering box, with the tube pushed as high as it will go (while still extending through the sleeve). Turn the steering wheel until the steering is centered; also turn the cancelling ring on the control head to the center of it's travel (finger pointing straight down). Slide the control head in just far enough to engage the slot, then turn it so the turn signal lever is pointing straight up. Then finish sliding it into place and tighten the 3 grub screws (all without turning the steering wheel). Now the stator tube will be in the right place so you can tighten the compression nut on the steering box to lock it there.
