So, a week or so ago I had a small electrical fire. All is well and fixed up (bad thing #1) . Two days ago I was driving the Bugeye when all of the sudden it started idling very rough. It drove OK, but when idling it shook and sputtered pretty good. I checked the spark and it seemed good, I checked and adjusted the carbs and they were good. I was stumped, then I poked around again yesterday morning and discovered that the magnets from the Pertronix kit were rubbing the module thing that replaced the points. I pulled the distributor and discovered that the shaft was bent! Very odd, but luckily I have spares....I rebuilt the distributor with a "new" shaft and all was well (bad thing #2).
Which brings me to bad thing #3.....I installed the distributor and it fired right up. Great! I shut it down then went to refire it and nothing but clicks. The starter decided to let go . What timing!
I have a good spare, so nothing lost except a little time. I just hope that problem #4 is a long way off.....I want to enjoy driving the Bugeye this summer.
What's interesting is that I went about 2 years between bad problems (busted axle back then) and all of the sudden three in a week.
Anyone ever hear of the distributor shaft just bending all of the sudden? Metal fatigue maybe? Just plain weird to me.
