TR6 Rollbar Identification...TR6?

I recently bought a rollbar on eBay that is supposed to be for a TR-6. The seller says he had it on a 1976 TR-6. It would mount on the wheel wells, but the convertible top mechanism hits it and won't go all the way down. It will fit inside the convertible top when it's up. Does anyone know if this is the correct roll bar for a TR-6, or what car this roll bar should be for? Thanks to all for any help.

I don't know the required measurements for the TR6 but if it is that close and the bolts will go through the frame, it probably is for a TR6. SCCA use to require a cross brace (a diagonal piece for strength) to be approved for racing so the roll bar was not specifically designed for SCCA. It seems dumb that it is not designed to work with the convenience of top positioning in mind. Worse case you can have it modified to work with the top.

This unit may not be for a TR6. The "feet" on the bottom are not twisted on mine and it does not hit the frame of the top. It's close, but it will not hit. I made sure before we drilled any holes.

Thanks Paul. Could you post a couple of pictures of how it's installed?

Sure, here ya go......

I had the carpeting custom cut at a local upholstery shop to fit around the bar. That way it mounts directly to the metal and it's lower than the padding and carpet as well.

Being on top, may push it against the top frame rails.

Thanks Paul. This one actually mounts higher, up on the wheel wells. If anyone knows what it really fits, I'll probably put it back on e-bay.

Wheel well fit was for TR3's, if I'm not mistaken.

Roll bars that mount on the wheelwells and cargo floor are much stronger than those that simply mount with all 4 legs on the cargo floor.

But the your bar is definitely not from a TR3. The two TR3 wheelwell legs are very short compared to the two floor bars.

Maybe a Spitfire?

If you are simply mounting the roll bar to the fender well and floor skin, you are looking at cosmetics and not safety. Before you drill holes in the body, you might want to reconsider as the roll bar only comes in handy when your car is upside down; the rest of the time, the roll bar is just in the way. Surface metal will not give the necessary support; you need to secure it to the frame of the car.

While what you say is somewhat true, since it is not a full racing cage, it does provide some protection and adds a nice spot to mount a third brake light.

There is a guy in the Cape Cod Club who was rear ended by an SUV and sent up a bank and then flipped over. He and his passenger crawled out of the car between the road and body from the support by the roll bar and partially collapsed windshield. He swears by his roll bar (mounted to the floor) and after seeing the pictures, I have to agree with his assessment.

I'd rather be with it than without it.
